Dog Grooming Tips and advice

Why should your pup be groomed? – Leaving your pup ungroomed puts them at very high risk of developing serious skin conditions due to matting dirt & irritations that is why getting them groomed is a very important & necessary aspect of caring for them.

Every breed is different and the length and thickness of your pups coat will determine how much they visit the groomers. Here are some handy tips to keep your pups coat in check in-between grooming appointments.

Brushing your dog

  • Brush your pup- Brushing keeps your pups coat in a softer & much better condition. Brushing helps to remove tangles, avoid matting & provides you with an opportunity to check your pups coat for fleas, ticks, or irritation. If your pup has a high maintenance coat (long or curly) we recommend brushing daily. If you leave a high maintenance coat unbrushed you risk the fur becoming matted and needing to have a closer shave at the next grooming appointment. If you need any advice on brushing at home like what brush to use or de-tangle sprays please ask one of our groomers here at pawfect pet grooming we are always happy to advise and recommend products to help you keep your pups coat in the best condition possible whilst you wait onthe next professional grooming appointment.

Clean paws after walking

  • Clean Paws after walkies –We don't wear our shoes to bed at night so why should we let our pups up on our bed and sofa after being outside for walkies? Pups get a lot of muck and dirt on their paws when they are regularly walked. Make sure you give them a wipe each time they come in again. Some waterless pup shampoo and a towel should do the trick.

Bathing regularly

  • Bath time –Giving your pup a bath regularly prevents any dirt build up and helps to keep them smelling fresh. Be sure to use a dog shampoo tailored to your pup’s skin and coat. Avoid using human shampoo as it can cause skin irritation. Make sure to rinse your pup thoroughly to ensure no soap or suds are left on their skin & if you chose to blow dry their hair make sure to use a low heat setting on the blow drier to avoid harming them.

Cleaning your dogs teeth

  • Clean your pups’ teeth – Your pups need their teeth cleaned just as much as we do to avoid any discomfort or dental problems. In addition to brushing their teeth regularly its important to add some dry food in their diets, not only does this help to strengthen their chewing muscles it also helps to improve their oral hygiene. There are also dental chews that can be handy to keep your pups teeth & gums clean in between brushing.

Looking after your dogs ears

  • Clean your pups ears – Ear infections are very common. It is important to keep your pups ears cleaned at least once a month to help prevent infections. Allowing wax or bacteria to build up inside your pups ears can lead to painful infections. Use a cotton ball and some organic ear cleaner (specifically for dogs) to clean the inside of their ears very gently. Do not use Q-Tip’s or cotton swabs as this could cause damage or irritation to your pups ear canal.

Tear stain removal

  • Clean around your pups’ eyes – When dirt builds up around your dogs eyes it forms a gunky discharge around the tear ducts. This can cause dark brown or reddish stains around your pups eyes. Some breeds have more noticeable tear stains than others. Using room temperature water and a cloth or sponge dab away the mucus from around your pups eyes for tougher tear stains try using a comb and some tear stain remover to get it out. If you need any advice about your pups tear stain or what to use to remove it get in touch with one of our groomers we will be happy to advise you. Never try to clean your pups actual eye as this could cause serious damage or irritation.

Take off the Collar

  • Take their collars off at home – As long as your pup is secure in their own home and unable to wander off it is okay to remove their collar. This prevents skin irritation under the collar and prevents the pups fur from matting underneath the collar also.

Washable dog beds

  • Use dog beds that can be washed – Dogs love a fresh and comfy bed just as much as humans do. Keeping your pups bed fresh, clean and free from fur build up can keep your pup fresher too.
